About General Metal
A Single Machine and a Simple Philosophy
General Metal was founded in 1966 by John Tuszl in a one-room shop with a single sheet metal machine and a simple philosophy: Build a strong team and create a rewarding family atmosphere where people enjoy coming to work. These elements have allowed us to develop a service-oriented team that truly thrives on customer satisfaction.
During our early years, General Metal quickly evolved, adding new capabilities and new clients, growing out of seven different shops by 1974 (when John purchased our first major facility). Not long after, Susan (John's oldest child) and Michael (John's oldest son) joined the business to help support our rapid growth and expansion.
Advancing Sheet Metal Technology
The 1980s saw the introduction of CNC technology, increased capacity and a move to our current facility. During this burgeoning technological period, we did a lot of work for Unisys and IBM, producing the sheet metal for countless mainframe computers.
As the large-scale, blue-chip projects started to slow down and international competition picked up, John started to transition the operation to his children, adding John Jr. to the corporate roster. In 1996, Michael was named president and the next chapter of General Metal officially began.
Under the leadership of our second-generation owners, General Metal has continued to look for ways to control costs and increase output through the use of cutting-edge equipment, such as laser cutters, punch laser combination machines and robotics. We are currently exploring and implementing fiber laser technology to once again increase speed and productivity.
